Periodontal cleanings are deep cleanings that remove tartar buildup from deep between the teeth, as well as the gum pockets and tooth roots. Also known as scaling and root planing, this type of cleaning is recommended for patients with gum disease.

If inflammation or an infection is present, Dr. Gloor will carefully evaluate the depth of each pocket in your gums and rinse these pockets with antiseptic medication. The purpose of these cleanings is to prevent the tissue that supports your teeth from receding and leaving the teeth loose.

What Happens During a Periodontal Cleaning?

Dr. Gloor will first review your medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for deep cleaning. During the procedure, Dr. Gloor will clean your teeth with a scaling tool to remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line. 

Once the teeth are clean, Dr. Gloor may apply an antibiotic gel to the pockets in your gums to kill any bacteria which has been causing an infection. You may also receive a prescription for antibiotics following the procedure to encourage faster recovery.
